This broad adoption of artificial intelligence spans industries and regions, demonstrating that AI is no longer the exclusive domain of tech giants but has become an essential technology for enterprises of all types.</p><p dir="ltr">Customer service stands at the forefront of this adoption wave, with 63% of organizations deploying AI to enhance customer interactions. Document processing (54%), IT operations (51%), and security applications (51%) follow closely behind, showing how AI has rapidly infiltrated core business functions. This isn't merely experimentation—it's transformation at scale.</p><p dir="ltr">The enthusiasm for AI runs deep within organizational hierarchies. The Asia-Pacific region leads in budget allocation, with 86% of APAC businesses dedicating resources to AI initiatives, compared to 76% in Europe and 75% in the United States. Their use has grown organically within the business units, so we have duplication. Our research reveals significant shortcomings in three critical areas—infrastructure readiness,&nbsp;talent availability, and&nbsp;data quality—each representing a potential barrier to realizing AI’s full potential.</p><p dir="ltr"><img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1742894315616-arm_infographics-04.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dii"></p><p dir="ltr">Infrastructure limitations are particularly concerning. Only 29% of organizations have systems or storage resources to meet growing AI demands. Even fewer—a mere 23%—have dedicated power infrastructure to handle the increased energy requirements of AI workloads. This means 77% of businesses have only begun upgrading their facilities—if they have any power management strategy. Additionally, 65% of leaders acknowledge that their organizations lack comprehensive energy efficiency optimization measures for AI systems, raising questions about operational costs and environmental impact as these workloads grow.</p><p dir="ltr"><img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1742894343051-arm_infographics-05.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dii"></p><p dir="ltr">The talent gap poses an equally significant challenge. A third of business leaders (34%) report their organizations are "significantly under-resourced" or "under-resourced" when it comes to AI expertise, while nearly half (49%) identify a lack of skilled talent as a primary barrier to successful AI implementation. As one C-level executive in manufacturing lamented, "It's about manpower talent. It's so hard to find people who know AI and can talk about AI."</p><p dir="ltr">Despite recognizing the talent gap, organizations are taking inconsistent approaches to addressing it. While two-thirds (66%) of leaders express intentions to upskill existing employees to adapt to increased AI integration, 39% still don't have dedicated programs to develop AI skills among their workforce. This disconnect between recognized need and decisive action threatens to widen the talent gap rather than close it.</p><p dir="ltr">Perhaps most fundamentally, organizations struggle with data readiness—the essential foundation for effective AI applications. Nearly half of businesses leverage customer data (49%) and operational data (48%) for AI initiatives. However, data management practices remain largely rudimentary. Only about half (53%) of organizations have basic data automation processes for AI/ML models, while 18% rely on manual or ad hoc data cleaning procedures. Not surprisingly, 46% of leaders cite data quality and accessibility issues as a major barrier to successful AI implementation.</p><p dir="ltr">Industry leaders recognize these challenges. One Vice President in the financial industry's IT department explained: "Our data quality and cataloging is so critical when it comes to AI...That is work in front of us." Another C-level IT executive in manufacturing emphasized the need for integrated data platforms: "We need to get the data into one platform so we can try to leverage the other functions to use AI."</p><p dir="ltr">These infrastructure, talent, and data challenges cannot be overlooked. Without addressing these fundamental capabilities, organizations risk their AI investments delivering diminishing returns as they attempt to scale beyond initial proof-of-concept deployments.</p><h2 dir="ltr">Security Sensitivity</h2><p dir="ltr">As organizations increasingly integrate AI into their operations, a new dimension of risk has emerged that demands urgent attention: data security and privacy. Security concerns are growing proportionally, with personally identifiable information (PII) rapidly becoming central to AI initiatives.</p><p dir="ltr"><img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1742894375730-arm_infographics-06.jpg" class="fr-fic fr-dii"></p><p dir="ltr">Nearly half (49%) of businesses already use customer data to power their AI initiatives, and the trend is accelerating. Looking ahead, 56% of leaders indicate their organizations plan to utilize personally identifiable information for future AI applications. This growing reliance on sensitive data introduces significant security considerations.</p><p dir="ltr">As one director in the life sciences and biotechnology industry explained: "I think when you get into some of these companies, ours in particular, we have to be a little bit more safeguarded because of the data sets we have. Not all of it can be shared in public knowledge, but AI makes looking at that data, interpreting that data, analyzing that data 1000 times easier."</p><p dir="ltr">The expanded use of sensitive data in AI systems introduces security considerations and ethical concerns about bias and fairness. AI systems are only as objective as the data they're trained on, raising important questions about how organizations ensure their AI applications make fair and unbiased decisions.</p><p dir="ltr">Our research reveals a significant gap in this area. Nearly half (47%) of business leaders acknowledge their organizations have limited bias detection and correction processes in their AI systems. Even more concerning, 17% reported having no formal bias correction process and relying instead on ad hoc bias checks. This inconsistent approach to bias mitigation poses significant risks, especially as AI becomes more deeply integrated into consequential business decisions.</p><p dir="ltr">Forward-thinking leaders recognize these challenges. As one Vice President in the financial industry observed: "We have to make sure that data is bias-free, and to do that, we have to come up with policies and standards controls that need to be implemented within the organization by support of data scientists and data stewards." This recognition drives 44% of leaders to identify AI ethics and data engineering as the most critical skills their organizations will need in the next five years.</p><p dir="ltr">On a more positive note, organizations are beginning to implement security measures for their AI systems. Only 5% of businesses report no specific AI security measures. The vast majority are taking at least some precautions, with 56% conducting regular security audits of AI models and infrastructure, 56% performing security testing of AI-powered applications, and 51% conducting vulnerability assessments for AI systems.</p><p dir="ltr">Despite these measures, significant concerns persist. Nearly half (48%) of business leaders identify data privacy breaches through model extraction as a top AI security concern. One Vice President of Marketing and Sales in retail observed: "I think there's a big open question on IT security that large companies are going to worry about."</p><p dir="ltr">As AI systems become more deeply integrated with sensitive business and customer data, organizations must evolve from basic security practices to comprehensive security strategies that address the unique vulnerabilities associated with AI technologies.</p><h2 dir="ltr">Preparing for an AI-Powered Future</h2><p dir="ltr">One prediction seems certain as we look toward the horizon: AI adoption will continue to accelerate across all industries. Organizations that prepare effectively today will position themselves to capitalize on this technological revolution, while those that fail to address fundamental readiness gaps risk falling behind.</p><p dir="ltr">The business case for AI continues to strengthen among organizations using AI; 65% report that their AI applications are meeting or exceeding expectations for return on investment. One major reason for this usage gap is that employees haven’t been given enough guidance or training – only<a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/652727/strategy-fail-without-culture-supports.aspx#main#:~:text=One%20reason%20for%20this%20usage,17">&nbsp;15% of U.S. workers</a> say their organization has communicated a clear AI strategy, and a mere 11% feel “very prepared” to work with AI in their role.</p><p dir="ltr">When people aren’t sure why or how to use new AI tools, it’s no surprise they stick to familiar routines. This lack of preparedness is widespread. Even though 75% of companies have now adopted some form of AI technology, just<a href="https://www.randstad.com/randstad-ai-equity/">&nbsp;one-third of employees</a> have received any AI-related training in the last year. In other words, companies are rolling out AI faster than their teams can absorb it. The result? Employees feel left behind and anxious. They might even quietly push back against AI projects – skipping the use of a new system or voicing doubts – not because they hate innovation but because they feel unready and unsupported.</p><p dir="ltr">Corporate leaders risk underutilizing their AI investments when the workforce isn’t on board. Consider that only about<a href="https://www.gallup.com/workplace/652727/strategy-fail-without-culture-supports.aspx">&nbsp;one in five digital transformation initiatives fully achieves its goals</a>, often due to cultural and adoption issues. When employees aren’t empowered to use AI, those expensive platforms and algorithms can turn into costly shelfware, delivering only a fraction of the promised productivity gains. <p dir="ltr" id="isPasted">In case you missed it, there are new iterations of Wi-Fi that change the discussion from individual radio link performance to network performance. Many new techniques have been introduced in Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and the soon-to-be-ratified Wi-Fi 7 standards that improve performance, at both device and network levels. Designing a Wi-Fi front end module using a wireless SoC based on the new Wi-Fi standards can be complex and costly, so choosing a pre-certified module is the most straightforward way to get to market quickly.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">When laying out a PCB containing a high-performance, miniature wireless SoC, every detail is important - from signal integrity on the high-speed digital I/O bus carrying data to the transceiver, to impedance-matching between the RF output pin and antenna. It requires specialised RF expertise to identify issues early and avoid difficulties later. Also, Wi-Fi development requires expensive test equipment. By contrast, the radio design has already been optimised in a module, which can also help remove hassles from the development cycle. This leads to substantial cost savings.</p><h2 dir="ltr">Certification is expensive</h2><p dir="ltr">Products shipped with a transmitter need to ensure that they function in harmony with other devices in a shared environment. The harmony is achieved by the path of certification of these products following stringent testing of the radio according to locally applicable regulations. Of course, this also applies on products containing a Wi-Fi transceiver. Infact, the costs of going through a full certification tends to be more expensive for Wi-Fi, given the nature of the technology. A Wi-Fi product needs to have an optimal radio behavior when placed next to other products &nbsp;in the same or different but co-located Wi-Fi networks. Additionally the Wi-Fi product must also guarantee that it doesn’t interfere with other ISM band technologies like Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread or other proprietary wireless stacks. Furthermore, a badly designed Wi-Fi device is highly susceptible to disturb or be disturbed by LTE Cellular radios, or radars operating in 5 GHz bands for use in civil or military applications.</p><p dir="ltr">The situation has been further exacerbated by the global discord on how to use 6 GHz band in context of ISM band technologies like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. For example, while the United States has permitted the entire 1200 MHz bandwidth to be used for ISM applications, the European Union has only opened 480 MHz in the lower 6 GHz band. Navigating worldwide regulatory hurdles often ends up being the single biggest hidden cost in the hardware design. Working with test labs to pass the regulatory testing is an additional effort. However, increasingly, device vendors are also capable of interfacing NCP with a TCP/IP stack running over some form of real-time OS (e.g. FreeRTOS).</p><h3 dir="ltr">Multiple wireless protocols</h3><p dir="ltr">A project may require an assortment of connectivity options. Depending on the role to be executed, one can choose from a single-protocol, Wi-Fi-only module, to a multi-protocol solution that supports Bluetooth and 802.15.4-based mesh connectivity. For a small premium, the multi-protocol solution offers tight integration and better handling of coexistence compared to a discrete multi-SoC/module solution.</p><p dir="ltr"><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width: 833px;"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/wevolver-project-images/froala%2F1740050360328-pan.png" style="width: 100%px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib"><span class="fr-inner"></span></span></span></p><p dir="ltr" id="isPasted">Figure 1 PAN9019 - a certified radio module containing dual band WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4 &nbsp;sub-systems.</p><p></p><h3 dir="ltr" id="isPasted">Communication Interfaces</h3><p dir="ltr">Each device and application has its own unique wireless connection capability and requirement. While one device must pump multiple gigabits through a wireless link for streaming 4k video, another device may find a few kilobits more than adequate to report sensor data, or to remotely operate an actuator. The available options mirror the diversity of applications. So, there are wireless modules that support high-speed communications interfaces like SDIO and PCIe that are suitable for very high-throughput data pump applications, while other solutions are optimised for power-constrained applications using interfaces like SPI, I2C and UART to connect sensors.</p><h3 dir="ltr">Antenna Choices</h3><p dir="ltr">The antenna is an important consideration in a wireless design. It acts as a transducer that converts currents and voltages received from the transceiver into electromagnetic energy radiated out by wireless – and vice versa. A sub-optimal antenna can render a product entirely unusable. This is why the choice of the antenna is often dictated by the design of the end product. While some designers prefer compact antennas designs integrated within the PCB, others use external terminal-mounted antennas for improved coverage. One must remember that the antenna is an integral part of the radiator set-up, and is therefore explicitly linked to wireless module regulatory certification. Lesson: look at the fine print when choosing an antenna! Modules may come with an onboard antenna, or with a certified reference design that allows users to copy the exact design and reuse the certification grant. The end goal is always to achieve optimal radio coverage for a given design, which may require modification to antennas and associated certification.</p><h2 dir="ltr">What to expect from a Wi-Fi module vendor</h2><p dir="ltr">In IoT, Wi-Fi implementation is often critical. Therefore, a module vendor needs to deliver certain core values:</p><h3 dir="ltr">Hardware design support</h3><p dir="ltr">RF designs can often throw up nasty surprises, just when they are least expected. It is at this stage that support from engineers with valuable experience in designing Wi-Fi modules is crucial to achieve a quick design cycle. A module vendor can support in various ways: reviewing PCB layout; matching the input impedance of the antenna; recommending module or antenna placement for better coverage; etc.</p><h3 dir="ltr">Adding new regulatory domains and antennas</h3><p dir="ltr">As mentioned earlier, ease of achieving regulatory certification of the radio functionality is one of the primary benefits of using Wi-Fi modules. Therefore, vendors should have a broad regulatory strategy to ensure design flexibility, including multiple domains to cover more markets; and multiple antenna types.</p><p dir="ltr">In some cases, a certified antenna on the module may be inadequate for the radio performance required, necessitating a different antenna than that which has been certified. In other cases, a product may be targeting a new market for which the module vendor does not hold a grant and/or test reports. In such cases, a module vendor’s support is needed to add a new regulatory domain to the list of pre-existing certifications, or to certify a completely new antenna type. Module vendors can support by testing for new regulations, issuing an authorised notice-of-change to the original granted certification.</p><h3 dir="ltr">Software troubleshooting</h3><p dir="ltr">Wi-Fi driver integration on an embedded platform is one of the most important topics during the entire software life cycle of the project. Let’s take the example of an NCP for a Linux-based embedded device. It is common practice for wireless semiconductor vendors to issue periodic releases of drivers tested against the latest stable version of the Linux kernel. Also, the wireless drivers need to be patched for security vulnerabilities. Upgrading to a new release, especially in the case of wireless devices with ‘out-of-tree’ drivers, may sometimes lead to a product experiencing unexpected behaviour. It is here that support from a module vendor, either through communication about the discovery of a vulnerability and availability of security patches, or by actively troubleshooting and doing root-cause analysis of error during driver integration, can go a long way to smooth project management. The same is also true for a wireless module designed around an embedded wireless microcontroller.</p><h3 dir="ltr">Ensuring full supply chain support</h3><p dir="ltr">Poor vetting of the supply chain can ruin an otherwise exceptional PCB design. Lacking even a small and seemingly inconsequential component like a resistor may hold up production, but an alternative should be available. However, a certified radio module is one of the most critical components as it is intrinsically associated with end-product declarations made by the manufacturer to the regulatory bodies. Consequently, redesigning the product may not be possible – certainly it will be a very costly affair. This is where the full support of a capable and committed module vendor brings tangible value to the table. Topics may include: technology consulting to understand best platform design; product lifecycle management; and production forecasting. Immediately, upon its election victory in the UK, the new Labour administration was urged by leading industry body, EngineeringUK, ‘to take immediate action to tackle the growing skills shortage in STEM fields’. Even before being elected, policies were being put in place, such as a commitment to publish a cross-government action plan to break down barriers in STEM, &nbsp;setting ‘a clear direction for government policy around diversity in STEM’ to improve ‘equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in STEM central to work across government’.</p><p dir="ltr"><a href="http://www.mikroe.com">MikroElektronika</a> (MIKROE) is a proud advocate of STEM activities. These voltage impulses are naturally weak - in the range of a few millivolts, even microvolts. Therefore, any external interferences can obscure them. Interference might be produced in the heart itself or as the result of other muscular activity. Although not suitable for clinical examination, it is quite sufficient to allow some insight into brain activity. EEG click is equipped with a high-sensitivity circuit which amplifies faint electrical signals from the brain, allowing them to be sampled by a host MCU. To allow sufficiently high gain with no interference, EEG click uses the Texas Instruments’ INA114, a precision instrumentation amplifier, LASER trimmed for very low offset voltage, featuring very good common mode rejection ratio. Since ‘brain waves’ can be both positive and negative, EEG click uses a virtual GND at the potential of 2.048V. This also helps to reduce the noise from the common GND, improving the quality of the readings.
